IBAC Bulletin 06-01

Subject: Bizav use of ADS on the North Atlantic

The attention of IBAC has been drawn to the NAT FCMA Bulletin #08 dated 3 August 2006 from which, the following is an excerpt.

General Aviation (GA) Operator getting ready to use FANS
Some time ago the FCMA requested that the manufacturer of business jets ask their customer to stop using FANS until a number of deficiencies were addressed. One problem was that these aircraft were ADS equipped only but indicated that they also had a CPDLC capability. This was corrected BUT subsequent testing showed that both the Shanwick centralized ADS system and the Gander local ADS would not process these ADS only logons properly. The Shanwick system has been fixed and a Gander system fix has been tested and should be implemented soon. These aircraft still need to go through extensive testing before they can use ADS operationally in the North Atlantic.”

IBAC recommends that operators of ‘FANS’ equipped business aircraft take note of this FCMA Bulletin and, in close consultation with the aircraft manufacturer(s) and avionics OEMs concerned, take appropriate steps (including relevant training of flight crews) to ensure that the operational introduction and use of ADS proceeds in a problem free and orderly manner as possible.

FANS1/A Trials
Ed note: this box extracted from http://www.nat-pco.org/adswpr.htm
FANS 1/A ADS Waypoint Position Reporting Operational Trials have been in progress in the Gander and Shanwick Oceanic Control Areas (OCAs) since 1999, Reykjavik and Santa Maria since October 2001 and are also in progress in New York and Bodø FIRs.

Note: After 31st May 2005 "CADS" log-on will no longer be available for ADS only flights. Crews wishing to use ADS in CPDLC equipped FIRs will also have to be CPDLC trained.

FANS1/A CPDLC Operational Trials commenced in Gander and Shanwick airspace during the autumn of 2002. Reykjavik commenced trials in the first quarter of 2005 and Santa Maria will commence in the second quarter of 2006.

FMC WPR Operational Trials commenced in Gander, Shanwick and Santa Maria FIRs in November 2004. This is not a FANS application but is similar to ADS in its practical application.
Operators interested in participating in the trials should consult the Guidance Material for ATS Datalink Services documents listed below.
