Understanding SMS

At the core of the IS-BAO is a company Safety Management System (SMS). The IS-BAO requires that flight departments implement an SMS. The goal of the SMS is to manage safety risks effectively.

A safety-risk profile is a documented overview of the risks likely to be experienced by the flight operations of the company. The safety-risk profile is operator specific.

Guidelines have been developed to assist business aircraft operators to:
- identify the hazards and categorize the risks related to their operations,
- develop and document mitigations,
- track and measure the results of their activities.

A Paper that fully explains the Safety Management System as applied in the IS-BAO is available below in PDF format.

Access to the Guidelines is limited to purchasers of the IS-BAO as the Guidelines can only be used in conjunction with a copy of the standard. Owners of an IS-BAO can obtain a password from IBAC by sending an email to plessard@ibac.org.
